Ancient chinese phonology is the academic field dedicated to reconstructing and analyzing the phonological system of Old Chinese, the earliest attested stage of the language and ancestor of modern varieties, dating back to approximately 1250 BC. This research primarily utilizes comparative and historical linguistic methods, drawing evidence from documentary sources such as shared phonetic components in ancient characters and rhyming patterns in early verse like the Classic of Poetry, to infer the syllable structure, consonants, and vowels of this ancient stage, thereby providing crucial insights into the historical development of the Chinese language family.
